Half day trip to Wethersfield, CT

Carpe diem! A March day with sunny skies and 60 degree temperatures required a spring day trip. Not wishing to travel far, we decided to explore Wethersfield. We had been before but had only stopped at the historic First Church.

Unfortunately the historical society and info centers were closed. We were aware of a 3 mile Heritage Walk around the town, but couldn't find any brochures. We stopped at a few of those highlights, but first the Old Wethersfield Country Store. A cute store with a combination of interesting foods, candy, toys, etc.

Next stop was Wethersfield Cove. If you had told me that the first ship in CT was manufactured here and that there were expeditions to the West Indies from here, I would have not believed you. Yet it is true. They launched from here, down the Connecticut River to Long Island Sound (40 miles).

During Revolutionary times, this was known as Blackbird Pond, which some may know from the novel, "The Witch of Blackbird Pond". Wethersfield had its share of witchcraft accusations (9 cases and 3 executions from 1648-1668. Connecticut had 43 total court cases and 16 executions).

I liked the layers of brown stone rocks and shale.

The entry way to the river goes under the highway.

I tried to get a better picture of this boat. It was called Joseph M. Casey. My Dad is Joseph W. Casey

Next it was time for lunch at Lucky Lou's Bar & Grill eating outside on this gorgeous day with delicious fish & chips! Little crocuses were peaking up to greet Spring.

After lunch, a trip to the Ancient Burial Grounds

From there we went to the Comstock, Ferre & Co. which is the longest continually operating seed company and it is said that they once provided the seeds for the entire nation. Inside there are tons of choices of seeds. I understand they have rare hard to find seeds. I believe it. They also have a cafe inside the store.

The perfect way to complete a road trip is with ice cream. We enjoyed ice cream from the Main Street Creamery & Cafe. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather and watching the people who were out walking and enjoying the day. Such a quaint and historically fascinating town--the 2nd oldest town in Connecticut. We will have to go back to soak in more of the history and unique buildings. It's worth a return trip.
